What is Dog Scentwork and Enrichment?

Scentwork involves teaching your dog to search for and locate a particular object, treat or scent. We’ll begin with straightforward games before gradually making the searches more interesting as your dog understands the game. Enrichment is broader. It gives your dog appropriate ways to think, explore, play and use natural behaviours. The right activities will depend on the individual dog rather than following the same plan for every breed as all dogs are entirely different and prefer different levels of enrichment.

Every programme is tailored to you and your dog. Before we start, we’ll discuss what your dog enjoys, their previous training and what you’d like to achieve.

  • A free inital consultation call

  • An assessment questionnaire so that each session is tailored to you

  • Detailed notes after every session

  • Access to a video tutorial series to support your progress

  • Sessions held at your home or in nearby open spaces at time that suit you.

Sessions are available across the New Forest, Bournemouth and surrounding areas. The location may change as your dog progresses and according to the type of

activity we’re introducing. You don’t need specialist equipment or previous scentwork experience to begin. I’ll show you how to introduce each activity and how to recognise when your dog is engaged, needs help or is ready for a greater challenge.

  • No previous scentwork experience is required. The exercises will begin at a level your dog can manage. If another area of training needs attention first, I’ll explain this during the initial call.

  • No. Every breed uses its sense of smell, although different dogs will approach searches and games in different ways. The activities will be adapted to your dog’s breed, age, confidence and interests.

  • Potentially, yes. Sessions are private, so the environment and level of distraction can be selected around your dog’s needs. We won’t place your dog into a busy group or situation they can’t manage.

  • Sessions can take place at your home or in suitable nearby open spaces across the New Forest, Bournemouth and surrounding areas. We’ll agree on the right location based on your dog and the activities being introduced.

  • You’ll learn searches, engagement exercises and enrichment games that can be adapted for your home, garden or walks. Personalised notes and supporting videos will help you continue between sessions.
